Living Conditions in NIT Rourkela
The under-construction hall of residence “Homi Bhabha Hall” of our Institute is the place that no one wants to remember. The brand new hall though holds much better outlook & living standards, it also holds a package of unavoidable painful infections.

This hall was an uncontrolled breeding place of many insects. The boarders of this hall were forced to switch off the lights & shut the windows and doors during night even though it was hot in the room. They had to sweat all night or they were surely bound to catch an infection. Many boarders had been infected with severe skin-infections all round their stay in this hostel. Complaints after complaints were filed to the hall authorities but they turned a deaf ear.
To add to the boarders plight was the diagnosis of our Medical Dispensary Doctors, they detected this small but severe skin infection (due to insect breeding in one of the toilet’s water tank and insect movement ) as herpes (a severe sexually transmitted disease).
All the boarders were treated with herpes medication. The medication given was very slow in treatment. Some boarders went to nearby Hospital (Ispat General Hospital) where the doctor diagnosed it correctly & gave proper medication which helped in early recovery, but not all boarders were so fortunate they had so severe infections that they had to miss classes & rush back home.
On the first hall-day of this hostel the students presented the complete information on the living conditions of the hall to the Director, thinking that he would understand our plight, but he clearly said that the skin infection had nothing to do with the living condition in the hall & boarders should take care of their health.
Hence in all, the authorities of our Institute are not concerned about the health of the students, their only concern is ATTENDANCE & MONEY.
