Sever Logs Management Project

On Dec 3rd, 2007 started working on a project to maintain logs of a server (Sun Solaris) in a Database to view for usage & other daily office purpose needs. The target of this project is to create the daily list of server usage by different users from different IP addresses, recording their usage, generate backup reports and display it on a website for both users & administrators.

Tools Required:

Development will be done on Linux Platform (OpenSuSE 10.3)

1. Apache Web Server with PHP5 installed

2. MySQL Database

3. VI editor to create shell scripts

The Challenges in this Project are:

1. Getting the output of the command “last -a” into a MySQL Database with a little modifications in the command output.

2. Developing suitable scripts to get data frequently from the servers.

3. Formatting the output of the Database to suit the requirement of the project.

4. Developing a secure website in PHP to get the desired output & help server administrators manage the system easily.
